Fifth Grade

Fifth Grade AR Guidelines

Read each night with a parent or other family member at least 5-15 minutes.

Read a total of thirty-sixty minutes independently each day (both at school and at home)

Set goals each week for reading AR books and taking AR tests. A goal of every fifth grader should be reading primarily chapter books and a few picture books at their ZPD level. If a fifth grader reads the same chapter book each night for thirty minutes as well as at school, they should be able to finish it in a week.

Practice reading orally to family members to practice fluency.

CLASSROOM AR WORD COUNT AWARDS FOR FIFTH GRADE

As each fifth grade class take AR tests they "earn" words that accumulate into a class total. Each book has a certain number of words. If a test is taken on a book that contains 17,120 words AND a student receives a 100% on the AR test, those 17,120 words will be added to a class total. If the score is an 80%, then they only receive a portion of the 17,120 words. Fifth grade classes earn ribbon awards when they reach a specific number of words as a class. These certificates hang in the windows for all to see the hard work they have achieved.
