Fourth Grade

Fourth Grade AR Guidelines

Read each night with a parent or other family member at least 5-15 minutes.

Read a total of thirty-forty minutes independently each day (both at school and at home).

Set goals each week for reading AR books and taking AR tests. A goal of every fourth grader should be reading a combination of chapter books and picture books at their ZPD level. If a fourth grader reads the same chapter book each night for thirty minutes as well as at school, they should be able to finish it in a week.

Practice reading orally to family members to practice fluency.

CLASSROOM AR WORD COUNT AWARDS FOR FOURTH GRADE

As each fourth grade class take AR tests they "earn" words that accumulate into a class total. Each book has a certain number of words. If a test is taken on a book that contains 7,120 words AND a student receives a 100% on the AR test, those 7,120 words will be added to a class total. If the score is an 80%, then they only receive a portion of the 7,120 words. Fourth grade classes earn ribbon awards when they reach a specific number of words as a class. These certificates hang in the windows for all to see the hard work they have achieved.
