| Kindergarten students do not begin with the Accelerated Reader program at the beginning of school. Their teachers are working on basic sight words and the responsibility of caring for a library book. As soon as they have learned enough sight words and the ability to sound out words, kindergarteners may start the AR program. | ||
Kindergarten AR Guidelines Read each night with a parent or other family member at least 30 minutes. Team up with older students as a "reading buddy" to read AR books. Learn the process of reading an AR book and taking an AR test with their reading buddy. Begin taking over more responsibility for reading books on their own as the year progresses.
CLASSROOM AR WORD COUNT AWARDS FOR KINDERGARTEN As each kindergarten class take tests they "earn" words that accumualte into a class total. Each book has a certain number of words. If a test is taken on a book that contains 121 words AND a student receives a 100% on the AR test, those 121 words will be added to a class total. If the score is an 80%, then they only receive some of the 121 words. Kindergarten classes earn ribbon awards when they reach a specific number of words. These certificates hang in the windows for all to see the hard work they have achieved.
