Third Grade AR Guidelines Read each night with a parent or other family member at least 5-15 minutes. Read a total of thirty minutes independently each night. Set goals each week for reading AR books and taking AR tests. A goal of every third grader should be to begin exploring chapter books at their ZPD level. If a third grader reads the same chapter book each night for thirty minutes, they should be able to finish it in a week. Practice reading orally to family members to practice fluency.
CLASSROOM AR WORD COUNT AWARDS FOR THIRD GRADE As each third grade class take AR tests they "earn" words that accumulate into a class total. Each book has a certain number of words. If a test is taken on a book that contains 1,120 words AND a student receives a 100% on the AR test, those 1,120 words will be added to a class total. If the score is an 80%, then they only receive a portion of the 1,120 words. Third grade classes earn ribbon awards when they reach a specific number of words as a class. These certificates hang in the windows for all to see the hard work they have achieved.
